National CSR Concept for Kazakhstan.
Central Asia: This October EMG won the international tender for the review and analysis of Kazakhstan’s National Corporate Social Responsibility Concept, initiated by the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia in partnership with the Dutch embassy in Astana.
Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world Kazakhstan has the 11th largest proven reserves of both oil and natural gas.
The National CSR Concept was developed by a dedicated working group consisting of members of the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia (EFCA), the Kazakhstan Association of Businesses for Sustainable Development (KAPUR) and KIMEP University. Further support was provided by an array of high ranking professionals in the fields of business, government and civil society.
Experts from EMG attended the round table talks in Astana on 7 November and presented their preliminary findings.
The welcome address was given by Talgat Doskenov, member of the National Chamber of Commerce, and HE Hans Driesser, Dutch Ambassador to Kazakhstan.
After EMG had presented its report, key speakers included the Deputy of the Lower Chamber (Mazhilis), the vice chairman of the National Chamber of Commerce, the director of KAPUR, an Assistant Professor of KIMEP University and a representative from the UNDP.

Their analysis has provided us with critical insight and recommendations in these areas which we can directly apply for strategic improvement. As a result, the potential for the mainstream implementation of Kazakhstan’s National Corporate Social Responsibility Concept can be taken to a whole new level.”
Drs Daan Elffers, who worked on the project alongside Drs Zeljka Davis, James Greyson and Dr Robin Porter: “The National CSR Concept paper we have evaluated demonstrates that Kazakhstan is well positioned to enable rapid progress with CSR, with enormous potential benefits socially, environmentally and economically. By structuring the concept in a well-crafted systems model, processes not only become much more effective, but are also rapidly accelerated.”
The National Concept for Corporate Social Responsibility is based on the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan and extensive research including materials such as the UN Global Compact, the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, various publications by the European Union, ISO 26000 and many more.
